282 killed, 15 lakh families affected

Delhi yet to release funds

Srinagar: State Government on Tuesday alleged that Union Government of India has not released a single penny so far for the relief and rehabilitation of flood victims of Jammu and Kashmir. An official spokesperson told CNS that Rs 1100 crores are at the disposal of State Government and the government is spending this amount under SDRF to provide relief to the flood affected people.



    The official said that Government has collected all the data pertaining to loss incurred by different sectors as well as common people due to catastrophic deluge. He said that due to joint efforts put by local youth, police, Army and other agencies, the loss of more human lives were restricted. “All but 282 people lost their lives while 403 persons were injured. Floods also claim 90,000 livestock,” he said adding that floods in the State affected 15.27 lakh families.

   The official spokesperson said that the devastating floods inundated 5974 hamlets and damaged 3.44 lakh structures. He said that besides inflicting great damage to public infrastructure, 6.48 lakh hectares of paddy land was devastated.

    The official spokesperson further elaborated that due to flood fury 559 bridges, 7000 kilometers of roads, hundreds of water schemes, irrigation canals, government and semi government offices and buildings including schools, hospitals, industrial units, trade centres and other movable and immovable property suffered huge damage.

   He said that assistance for rebuilding Jammu and Kashmir has been sought from Central Government while New Delhi has been impressed upon to grant the funds up to the tune of Rs 44000 at an earliest. “So far Centre Government has not approved our recommendations. Under SDRF Rs 1100 crores at the disposal of State Government are being utilized,” he said adding that Rs 44000 crore-Memorandum approved by State Cabinet and submitted to Government of India for release of funds under Special Financial Package covers all sectors hit by devastating floods.
