Sufferers get nothing, ‘blue eyed given free ration’

Govt style of ration distribution

Srinagar: Even after a more than one month since the devastating floods ravaged valley and left half of this city submerged under water, the state government’s only bonanza of 50 Kilogram free rice, has still not reached to the affected people.

This free ration from the Omar Abdullah government has turned a cruel joke for the flood victims of Indira Nagar, Palpora, Batwara, Shivpora and its adjoining areas.
These people are still waiting for the free ration.

“We have not received even one kilogram of rice from the government,” said the locals.
The irony is that the areas, which got massively damaged, are yet to get the free ration while some of the areas have been given 20 Kilograms of rice instead of the 50 Kilograms. Some areas have been totally neglected. Few case studies conducted by the Kashmir Monitor also exposes the state government, which has completely failed to extend any help to its people.

“We have been asked to visit the Sonwar ration depot to get free ration which is two kilometers away from here. The auto-rickshaw will take Rs 100 fare charges to reach there. What kind of free ration it will be,” said Ghulam Nabi Bhat, Mohalla President Indira Nagar.

Bhat said that not a single official from the state government visited there.
“It is only the army which is doing a little bit of help here. We want to see our parliament member and the MLA. Both have not visited our areas since then,” said the locals
Meanwhile, Kashmir Monitor learnt from the sources that influential people have grabbed a huge chunk of rice from the depots. According to the official sources, the ration was distributed on the might of local MLA’s.

“The MLA, who have got a good say in the government managed the free ration for his or her constituency. They later distributed it on pick and choose basis. Khanyar and Habba Kadal are the glaring examples,” sources confirmed.

In Khanyar area, which was not that much affected, people got the free ration. The ration was distributed on pick and choose basis. “It is totally an unfair distribution of ration,” sources said.
Reports reaching here said that for the mere vote bank politics free ration of 50 Kilograms was distributed in some villages of Shopian which were not even affected by the floods.
