Police goes after former militants, stone pelters
Srinagar: With state all set to witness the assembly elections starting from November 25, police and other security agencies have pulled up their socks to get a bird’s eye in tackling any untoward situation. Sources told Kashmir Monitor the intelligence agencies have been tasked to frame the list of all the “ex-militants, stone pelters and other trouble makers” in most of the districts especially in Kashmir valley.
“We have been asked to frame the list of the ex-militants, stone pelters and other people, who are a threat to the law and order in the upcoming polls. They will be under the continuous vigil and if need arises will be taken into preventive custody,” sources confirmed.
In this regard, police has reportedly activated “its people and other sources” to maintain vigil in almost all the sensitive places. In a related incident Police last week called some youth from various villages of Shopian district to enquire about the prevailing situation. Police swung into action when it came to know that the name of militant out Lashkar-e-Toiba was found written on the walls on Panchayat buildings, sources added.
“Police also interrogated some youth after the name of famous militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba was found written on the walls of panchayat buildings in some villages in Shopian,” a police official said. However, after thorough interrogation, these four youth were released.
One of these youths (name withheld) told Kashmir Monitor that the SDPO concerned impressed upon them that nothing untoward should happen in the future.
“I don’t know who has written it. We definitely witness the increase of militancy here, but why we are harassed. I am not the Salah-u-Din. We face undue harassments which later push us to take extreme steps,” he said.
The panchayat buildings in villages especially in south Kashmir has been the main attraction for the stone pelters.
When contacted SP Shopian, Abdul Waheed Shah said these are some preventive measures to keep track of the situation. “It is our job to see what is happening around and deal with the things accordingly,” he said.
However, a top police official told Kashmir Monitor that it would be very difficult to tackle all the “threats” as in many areas there has been increase in the number of militants, who are active in places like Shopian, Pulwama and Tral. “We have reports that a huge number of militants both local and foreigners are active in the area,” he said.
The Director General of Police K Rajendra Kumar had already said that whosoever disrupts peace during the upcoming Assembly elections would be dealt with severely.
Anybody indulging in any subversive activity, which could create law and order problem in the electoral process, would be dealt with severely,” Rajendra has said.
