‘75000 not enough to even build a room’
Flood sufferers rue meager compensation
Srinagar: With state government claiming that it was at the fore front to serve the interests of the flood affected people but the victims don’t seem to be happy with the government rehabilitation policy as the compensation offered is relatively less to them.
Earlier the government had suggested Rs. 70,000 as compensation to the victims whose Pucca houses were washed away by the floods and Rs. 17600 to those whose Kucha houses have been destroyed.
The flood victims decried the delay in the complete rehabilitation who claimed that the sum suggested by the government was meager even to lay the foundation of a house.
“Nearly more than one and a half month has passed since floods hit most of Kashmir but government is yet to rehabilitate flood victims completely. How many months we have to wait further so that we could built our homes?” said Ghulam Qadir a local.
In Srinagar city, there are many families who have suffered huge loss due to the floods and have not been paid even a single penny by the government yet.
“The government is selective in its approach and only few people who have suffered damage are being paid compensation. Here in our area scores of the houses have suffered huge damage from inside while nothing is being offered to them by government, ”said Abid dar a local from Kursu Rajbagh.
The flood victims who have been rendered homeless are demanding the complete compensation from the government before the onset of winter.
“It took me more than 22,000 to clear the debris and I have got nothing out of it. These Rs.70,000 are not enough to construct a house. The government should ensure full compensation to the flood sufferers ahead of winter,” said Moti Lala resident of Gaw Kadal.
In Srinagar city maximum of the houses have collapsed in Rajbagh, Jawahar Nagar and Bemina areas as these were worst hit by the floods
It is worth to mention that earlier the Chief Minister said that his government’s focus was to put in place a concrete rehabilitation programme.
