Amid deluge, 14 militants killed in Sep, claims army

Srinagar: The militant activities in September 2014 were overshadowed by the floods which struck Kashmir, affecting a large percentage of the population, particularly in Srinagar city. However, according to Army, the month witnessed a number of militant infiltration attempts and movement activity, which were foiled by the troopers, resulting in the killing of 14 militants. Army also apprehended six militants in September.

A top Army official on condition of anonymity told CNS that in the beginning of September, even as the rains were lashing Kashmir and causing large scale flooding of parts of South Kashmir, the Army eliminated three militants in an encounter at Hanjan Bala near Shopian on September 2. Within a week, while Srinagar was reeling under the worst floods in over a Century; four more militants were eliminated at Laribal near Rajwar and Furkian on September 9.

“While the situation was stabilizing in Srinagar and other flood affected parts of the Valley, two militants were killed at Machhil on September 17 quickly followed by four more militants being eliminated at Tangdhar on September 19. Thereafter one more militant was eliminated at Lolab on September 30, bringing the total toll to 14,” he said adding that all the operations were based on specific intelligence ably supported by the local Police.
The Army official told CNS that during  the same month, a number of local militants were apprehended with help of Special Operation Group personnel and Police. “These included one member of LeT who was arrested on 17 September at Muqam, four Hizbul Mujahideen members who were apprehended from Sopore on 22nd and 23rd September and one more Hizb militant who was arrested on September 25 at Kirpalpura,” he claimed.
