CRS Organises relief camps

Srinagar: Thousands of people thronged to the relief camps organized by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in collaboration with Catholic Social Service Society (CSSS) in different flood hit areas of valley.
As part of their relief services CRS and CSSS set up their relief distribution camps, besides the medical camps in flood-hit north and south Kashmir parts of valley.

Moreover few medical camps were organized in Srinagar city near presentation convent school and Bemina were the team of local doctors besides doctors from holy family hospital, New Delhi and Saint Joseph’s hospital Baramulla, gave treatments to the people of flood-hit areas.

Project coordinator CSSS Shaiju Chako said CSSS was supported by Caritas India and CRS to set up relief distribution camps and work in different parts of flood-hit valley.

“We distributed relief among 621 households of Srinagar city in Bemina, Soutengo, Shivpora and other places,” Chako said, adding that 16 villages were covered in Pulwama and two villages in Kulgam. “We got material assistance from Corporate Disaster Response Network (CDRN).”

CRS and CSSS distributed relief material among the flood victims of Banyari village in north Kashmir’s Haajin area and provided blankets, set of utensils, thermostat (foam sheets) and a set of mattress among the flood victims.

“We will also provide one quintal of tin sheets per family in the same village. Trucks are being loaded at our go downs,” said Elizabeth Tromans, Regional Technical Advisor for emergency preparedness and response. “We did the ground assessment of the villages here and provided them smart cards as well. This card is scanned though software and we provide relief is distributed without any favoritism,” she added.
The relief was distributed among the villagers of Aastan Mohalla, Khanday Mohalla, Dar Mohalla and Marazi Mohalla.

“This time we are using smart cards (e-coupons). Earlier we distributed relief among 347 families and  our target is to cover 120 families more,” said Umesh Kumar Gupta, Communication Coordinator CRS.
People appreciated the efforts of the team and said it was the first team that reached out to the flood affected area.

“This is really helpful for people like us. After floods hit Valley, we didn’t receive any relief from government. This is the first team which reached here and distributed relief material,” said Deputy Sarpanch, Ghulam Hassan Dar.

He said the relief items like blankets and mattresses would help the families in winter season. “These relief items are really needed at this point of time keeping in view the approaching winter season,” Dar added
