Road macdamization to wait till May
SRINAGAR: The State government said the macdamization of roads that have been washed away or damaged in the recent floods won’t be done till May next year in view of weather conditions.
Due to the devastating floods that hit the State in September, at least 283 bridges have been damaged and out of which 53 bridges were collapsed and 127 km roads were washed away in Kashmir.
While as Commissioner Secretary Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department Tanveera Jahan said the weather does not permit them to macadamise the roads that have been damaged or washed away in the floods. “We can macadamise the roads for the next 5 to 7 days but it won’t be possible for us to macadamise them during these days. So we have to wait till next year for their macdamization,” Tanveera Jahan told The Kashmir Monitor.
She said the macdamization needs above 25 degree Celsius temperature. “But we can make the repairing of few roads that suffered minor damages,” she said.
Official sources within R&B said they are restoring the roads and bridges on the temporary basis.
“The permanent restoration of roads and bridges will be started from next year as the winter is approaching,” an official said.
Officials said the non-approval of the annual plan this year has already hit the developmental activities of the State.
They said the macdamization of roads could not be carried out properly this year due to lack of funds. Officials said the government has released a little amount of funds for the developmental works. “Now new developmental works have been started in this fiscal year due to non-approval of the annual plan so far. Funds for developmental works of Kashmir would be lapsed this year,” an official said.
Official sources said the least developmental works were executed this year due to lack of funds and the recent floods have turned the situation from bad to worse.
