BJP’s victory in Maharashtra, Haryana won’t affect JK polls: Congress

Srinagar: State Congress Wednesday contradicted Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over his remarks on BJP’s triumph in Haryana and Maharashtra, saying same in no way could affect poll results in Jammu and Kashmir.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had said that BJP’s win in Haryana and Maharashtra would have some effect on the assembly elections in the state, but maintained that the influence would not be as much as previously expected.
The state Congress chief Saif-ud-din Soz while reacting to the remarks of the chief minister asserted that the poll results in Haryana and Maharashtra would never affect poll results in Jammu and Kashmir and that Congress’s popularity in the Himalayan region would not be hurt by the BJP.
Soz maintained that Congress is the strong party and its roots in JK have been strengthened. He claimed that Congress will emerge as a single largest party in Jammu and Kashmir will form the next government.
Interestingly, chief minister while talking to reporters at Zevan on Tuesday while reacting to triumph of BJP in Maharashtra and Haryana in Assembly polls, said though BJP did well in the elections in the two states, the results were not upto their expectations.
“They (BJP) have done well, but not nearly as well as they had expected. If you compare BJP’s Parliament results in Haryana and BJP-Shiv Sena results in Parliament (polls) till now, they haven’t translated Parliament results into Assembly results in those states,” Omar had said, adding that BJP’s win in Haryana and Maharashtra would have some effect on the assembly elections in the state, but maintained that the influence would not be as much as previously expected.  (KNS)
