Civil Lines traders hold protest

Pressing hard to get relief approved

Srinagar: Traders in Lal Chowk Wednesday staged a sit in near Ghanta Ghar to press for their demands including international aid for their rehabilitation.

Scores of traders under the banner ‘Traders Association Lal Chowk’ held a sit in and started shouting slogans against what they called apathy of the government towards flood victims especially traders and businessmen.
The protesting traders erected a tent for their sit in forcing traffic to use alternative routes.
Traders and businessmen are demanding exemption in Income and Sales Taxes and an international aid for their rehabilitation.
Pertinently the trader’s representatives had many meetings with the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah and they met the Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well when the later was in Srinagar on Diwali day.
Meanwhile, a day after Kashmir Chamber of Commerce claimed that Government was indifferent towards the problems of flood hit traders and people, Secretary Finance Wednesday, B B Vyas  said that a memorandum has already been submitted to Government of India while State Government is pressing hard to get that memorandum approved and sanctioned.
Kashmir Chamber of Commerce president Ashiq Hussain had claimed that Government is doing only lip service and is doing nothing to provide respite to the flood hit people. Secretary Finance to Government of Jammu and Kashmir B.B.Vyas said that state government has been leaving no stone unturned to get the memorandum approved from the Central Government.
After fulfilling all the formalities, we submitted a memorandum to the government of India and since then we are putting all our efforts to get that memorandum approved so that we could assist not only traders but common people as well who have been badly hit by devastating floods,” Vyas said.
